The Watch

An old watch my parents gave to me as a young boy
rests on my tired wrist.
It has seen a lot,
more than some,
yet less than others still.
Its slender arms have swung around without fail,
for what has seemed to be
since the beginning of time.
It is circular and gold,
but like all faithful watches
grew old.
Then one day,
I noticed the ticking had slowed.
And with a tear in my eye,
the old battered watch,
ticked no more.
