To the Top
I have to be careful,
I could fall.
It wouldn’t hurt, but
It’s a long way down.
I’d have to start all over.
I fall.
Only ten feet lost.
The sand, it must have given way.
It’s getting harder
All the rocks, foot holds, and plants,
They’re all behind me now,
Far below, stupid gravity.
It’s all sand from here and up.
I climb three feet up,
Only to slide two feet down.
It’ll be worth it, it always is
Getting to get to the top.
I’m almost there, so close
I slip, but only a little.
I keep going, one more step.
The top, forty or so feet up.
The view, the sun, the wind, the height,
They all make the climb worth it.
I walk away from the edge
Now the fun part.
I run as hard as I can, arms pumping.
I’m flying, the air, the adrenaline.
I land halfway down.
I hit the sand and roll
It broke my fall,
But I keep rolling down.
All the way down.
It was worth it.
I’ve got time.
I’ll start again.
I have to be careful,
I could fall.
