Losing them

The “snap” of our bonds breaking
Filling my ears as I open the door
Memories of gentle tickles and words
The wanting is stinging behind my eyes
But in my soul I know this is how it has to be

I never told them how much it meant
The loving dinners and tender smiles
A feeling of being needed
But in my heart I saw it as the lie
Each night provoking my agonized cry

I would be so close to saying it
Then I looked into those loving eyes
The words were swallowed down tart
I couldn’t let it taint them
Destroy the heaven built by those precious hands

The moment of judgment
My foot touches the dreaded pavement
All I can feel is this rip
The sweet hand returns to me
Whispering of “I love you”
I sink down into the essence
Finally I am drowning in the freedom
