The Scuba Diver
Dive off the boat into the clear blue water.
I am now emerged in another world,
With neighbor hoods of fish, rays and sharks.
The vibrant colors reflect the light
It is a spectrum of colors
A blue tang swims by
Reminding me of a childhood of Disney movies
Again reminiscent
I see a shark
It swims with stealth
Its shark body caressing the water
I wish I could be that graceful.
The water is warm, so very pleasant.
Bliss.
I can feel my mood rising
I am in paradise
Like Heaven
I wish I could stay here,
Forever
My anger fades away,
Thoughts from the argument are no longer there
I decide to make up with them when I leave this bliss
The current picks me up
Takes me further down the reef
I cannot believe my eyes
Here it is even more vibrant
How can nature make such beautiful colors?
But Then…
A dark flash in the corner of my eye
It’s a stingray,
King of the rays
Swimming towards me
I approach slowly.
It swims faster.
Finally
We are face to face
His eyes are dark
Staring me down.
I reach out
To touch its face
Caress it.
My touch is electric,
But in the wrong way.
Its tail whips around,
Barb in the middle,
Inches away from my heart.
The spike pierces my skin
Then through the muscle
And my ribs
Finally it hits my heart.
The ache is unbearable.
My body is in shock
The pain and burning my body
I can feel myself weakening.
My eyes are closing
I cannot move
I cannot shout for help,
I am underwater.
My body rests on the ocean floor.
Eyes close for the last time
I wish I could’ve told my family
I love them.
