Where I Belong

I laughed,
I played,
I smiled.
Carefree.
I was just a kid.
I got real sick
My hair, in clumps
On the floor.
Why couldn’t they fix me?
It hurt so much.
I couldn’t play anymore,
I rarely laughed;
My body too weak.
But I was just a kid.
I was too young to understand,
The grown-ups always crying
Talking in hushed tones.
Why wouldn’t it stop hurting?
I didn’t ask for this life.
I didn’t choose it.
I was just a kid!
But I didn’t complain,
I never asked, “Why me?”
This was the life God
Chose for me.
He knew I was strong
Even though I was just a kid.
But soon it was too much
For my little body to handle.
Surrounded by love,
Always by love,
Mom
Dad
Brothers
Sister
It finally stopped hurting
But gentle tears still streaked their faces.
Why were they crying?
I was free.
I laughed,
I smiled,
I played
And it didn’t hurt.
They used to watch over me
Now I watch over them.
Protect them.
Love them.
Take care of them.
I was just a kid,
But this is my home
Where I belong.
One day they will join me here,
And we will again be together,
this time forever.
