- What Matters
Heart racing, feet kicking, lungs shrinking, and hair flying,
My muscles screech protest and agony.
Pushing away from the misery, my focus is set on the lone ambition.
Pulling up air and struggling with the rhythm,
the world spins before my eyes.
I press on until the familiar flash of pain lances through my chest,
And along with the sting comes one strained gasp.
Frustration flows through to my fingertips as I exhaust to a walk.
Peers streak past my distressed figure,
Smiles perched on their faces and questions held in their eyes.
My temper is flaring and my eyes, aflame,
And I could smash boulders to powder.
A howl of disgust bubbles in my throat,
But I swallow it down and keep my image cool.
Defeat spreads through and dulls my fire.
I trudge out the door, my head hanging low,
As breath gently floods back to me, just like always.
