The Un-Writable Song

I don’t know how to write a song of myself
If I knew myself, I could write one
The expectations,
The requirements of society
They have all made me, who I am;
Leaving me behind
You know who I am more than myself
But I do know something about myself
I know I have a passion
A dream of being lost in the cosmos
Discovering what created me and everything around me, the way it exists
The beginning and the ending of this journey
I’ll search the stars, the sky, the constellations
I’ll search the black holes, the white holes, the worm holes
I’ll search the other planets, the faraway galaxies, the alternate universes
Because maybe, just maybe, I’ll find myself there
I could write a song of myself for you now,
But it won’t be true
Only when I conquer my dreams,
Only when I break through the barrier of expectations,
Only when I’ve found my purpose,
Will I be able to write a true song of myself.

The author's comments:
We had to imitate Walt Whitman's Song of myself, and write about ourselves for an assignment. This is my poem.

What a thorough expression of identity and direction. Awesome.

An excellent expression of the self. Could feel the poet's inner desire.
