Beloved Soldier
I lay there cold and afraid
In awe of my unfortunate turn of events
Who would do such a thing to me? I was only trying to defend my country.
Scars of war covered my face
Blood oozed from a gash on my neck
I heard gunshots far away, distant, yet another of my soldiers shot in an instant.
I pictured my wife rocking my baby to sleep
With songs of contentment playing in the room
I wondered, “Why am I here and not there?
Why am I not watching her grow, but moaning in despair?”
I tried to get up, but was shoved down
With two pairs of eyes glowering down at me
I spat at them and grimaced in defeat.
They took out their weapons, I whimpered, not ready to die
I had come here to protect everyone back home
Not to drift into a deep slumber, distraught and alone.
But I will not die in vain, my friends and family
Knew I was meant to protect my country
Even if they knew they might lose me.
So with a sharp pang in my chest, and a little tug at my heart
My spirit lifted off into heaven,
While my body lay there,
Towered over by malicious men.
