I am from the stereo system.
I am from a place of dancing and making a fool of yourself,
Where the whole family laughs as you sing your heart out in the living room.
I am from the CD cases collecting dust as interests change
And the rhythm of the bass.

I am from the tan ranch with the red shutters.
You know where that is, right?
I am from where the dark woods meets the sunny lawn.
I am from the swings set out by the horse shoe pits,
Out where the property ends and the road begins.
I am from the green room where the books abound,
Where that loved poster hangs on the wall with the horse hair.
I come from the smell of incense and flickering candles.

I am from the wild flowers in the woods,
From the smell of saddle soap and clean leather.
I am from the sound of whinnying horses and barking dogs
And the smell of the barn.
I am from the backyard where the kittens were found.
Can I keep her, mom?

I am from the warm Christmases and Thanksgivings at Dar’s with Mo.
Where there was ham and other good food.
I am from the place where you should go to church meets I know what I believe.

I am from the place where the music never stops,
Where I can dance and sing all I please
And where I know I’m safe to be me.
