A boy runs down the field
Blade in hand, towards an enemy he didn’t know he had
The battle rages, steel against steel, steel against leather and flesh
He feels the blood of allies and enemies alike on his face, mixing with the sweat, like it
mixes with the mud under his feet.
He just kept trying to survive, trying to live to see another day
Until he saw a friend bladed though his shield of wood and leather.
It’s then he sought a fight, he charged the attacker and before he could raise his shield the
boy’s blade cut into his neck.
When the steaming blood hit the boy’s face the memories of his life; resting in his
mother’s arms, eating apples under the tree, climbing to the top of the great oak
tree, they all faded and dimmed.
And when the fight was done, the men buried the boys of the field.
