A shock of red,
in a sea of gray.
A stoic figure
in the heated fray.
A lovely melody
in an icy blast.
A small reminder
of a summer past.
A beacon of hope
flying so bold.
One little red bird,
alone in the cold.

The author's comments:
Growing up in Iowa I experienced many Iowa winters. They last for 6 months and the temperature rarely gets above 15 degrees. During this seemingly endless gray one bird stands out, the cardinal. It is such a relief from the gray cold.
