The people are all staring at me
Looking at me like I'm a disgusting disease ridden rat
Hurrying to get away from me.
Sometimes they act like they don’t even notice that I am a human being
Just trying to get by.
I see the way they clutch their purses
And scurry past me
Thinking I am going to take something that is theirs.
They talk about me
And how it’s so pathetic that I am too lazy to hold a job
And support myself and how I think its societies fault that I am in my predicament.
These people couldn’t be more incorrect.
They don’t know that as a child I was homeless for portions of my life
After I got kicked out of foster care;
They don’t know that I was in foster care after
They found out that my father was sexually abusing me for three years.
I have a job but it doesn’t pay enough
For me to afford even the most inexpensive housing.
Or that I have a mild case of schizophrenia.
But cannot get the treatment necessary
Because of too expensive medicine
And over populated mental health wards.
If people knew these things
Would I be treated any different,
Or would I still be less then them
And deserving of rude glares?

This piece was inspired by an essay I wrote in English class.
