Carnival

I'm trapped by a fence that can't seem to break.
Watching children play, and eat cotton candy.
I'm a little kid too.
Why won't they let me out?
I see carnivals and events, held right by my backyard.
I sit there watching through my wooden fence.
Trying to make fun of my own, I mimic walking on thin wire.
Just like them.
I try swallowing twigs just like the sword swallower.
But I just end up gagging a bit.
Why can't I play too?

"Whoa, whoa, whoa." A painted face said.
He looked funny. I laugh.
I walk up to the fence and he talks to me.
"Don't swallow those you'll hurt yourself." he says.
"Then why doesn't the sword swallower get hurt?" I ask.
"Because he's done it before. Why don't you ask your mommy to come out here and play with us?"
"I don't have a mommy." I say. "My daddy says that I don't need the outside world.
I could see it in the funny man's eyes. He looked concerned.
"Don't worry bout me. I'll be fine."
"Here." He hands me a cotton candy and I smile with my mouth slightly open.
"Thank you very much Mr. Funny man." I say.
He crosses his eyes and I laugh some more.

Then he walks away.
