Circles and Dots

"Circle, circle, dot, dot, now you have the cootie shot,"
She giggled and her pigtails pounced,
As they played on the slide together
Until their mothers called them inside.
Innocent, sweet, happy, care-free;
They were best friends.

"Circle, circle, dot, dot,"
She remembered sardonically while mascara ran down her cheeks,
At his funeral.
She had died to his mother the day he was diagnosed.
Sinful, proud, jealous, and so fatally mistaken;
They had been the worst lovers.

"Circle, circle, knife, knife,
Now you have it all your life."

Im a little confused here as to what is going on. if its a he why do u say she was dead to his mother? and then the circle circle knife knife part doesnt make sense because i thought it was a diagnosis not a murder. eitherway, i really really really like it and its written rly well. its powerful and im blown away, even tho i dont quite get it. i think that that is almost what gives it its power - the fact that i dont totally understand it.
