If I Were a Heterosexual
If I were straight,
Life would probably be easier
My parents wouldn’t feel awkward and
My friends wouldn’t get uncomfortable.
I would get married
And I would have children
I would serve in the military
And I would share a will
I would walk up and down the streets
Hand in hand with another – and
People wouldn’t point;
they wouldn’t stare
But I’m not straight
And I can’t do those things
Maybe one day I will.
Maybe one day will be soon.
But one day is not today;
Because today, I can’t get married.
I’m an outcast because I’m different
And I’ve accepted it.
I just hope that, when I do have kids one day,
They won’t have to accept it.
