Things in the Dark

“Where are they?” I ask
She says nothing
“In your closet?” I coax
Nothing
“Under your bed?”
Silence
“I can not help you if you say nothing!” I cry

She mumbles
I ask again
“In the woods” she whispers
I furrow my brow

She slinks to the window without a sound
She points to a light
“There,” she whispers to the night

I act strong and mighty and climb out the window and enter the silent woods
To slay the ‘beast’

I stand, gazing at the light, and find
My horrors are true

It’s a thing
The head of a collie dog
Face of a donkey
Body of a horse
Wings of a bat

“What are you?” I ask
“Nothing” it says
“Just simple imagery, for I am all in your head”
And then I realize
That these monsters we seek
Are just mind games within the weak.
