His Name
Someone said your name
over dinner tonight,
over pad tai and peanut sauce.
It was just a name, to them,
just part of a story.
How could they know
why it made the bottom drop out of my stomach?
They didn't understand
why it made me feel the best kind of sick.
How the dark places in my chest ache.
No idea what I'm saying
and then get quiet.
There are a million names,
A million three-syllable combinations,
but none of them
should ever be as powerful,
provocative,
as your name.
