I Remember

I remember our first date

I asked to kiss you

You said not yet

Just wait

I remember meeting your family

For the first time

I shook your dad’s hand

Terrified

I remember going to the lake

Swinging on the bench

Ten long minutes of pure joy

I remember talking with you

On the phone

All threw the night

We fell asleep together

For the first time

I remember dancing with you

Leaning in close to your ear

And whispering

I love you

My knees were shaking

I remember arguing with you

For the dumbest reasons possible

I remember the long silences

Both of us wanting the other

To say sorry

To ask for forgiveness

I remember staring in your eyes

Wishing you’d change your mind

But you didn’t

You broke my heart

Destroyed our love

Left me to die

Alone with no one by my side
