Where I'm From

January 22, 2010
I am from exotic spices,
from the soothing breeze of auto rickshaws, and the rhythm of the
cleansing rain.
I am from the Jasmine Flower skillfully braided through one’s hair.
(Enticing, mesmerizing,
a whirlwind of a passing spring tide.)
I am from a land of mystery,
raveled up in a vibrant color scheme,
with the blazing sun capturing every morsel of the nation.

I am from the calming sound of a swish,
as the ball kisses the rim on its journey into the hoop.
I am from the inspiration of a family,
and the everyday adventure.
I am from the follower, to the leader, and from the student, to the teacher.

I am from “The Lord is my Shepherd…”,
and the virtuous Christmas pageants.
I am from the traditional Christmas tree, embellished with ornaments.
I am from “The Princess of God”.
I am from the songs of Our Father,to the memorization of the Ten Commandments.
I am from the Sunday Schools to the Youth Leagues,
and the everlasting friendships in between.
I am from God’s grace.

I am from the inside jokes and the picture albums,
from the latest songs to the new dance routines.
I am from the day dreams,
the sweet dreams,
and the nightmares.
I am from the love of a family,
and the gift of a friend.
