Diamond In the Ashes
She walks to school every day with a downcast face, bruises on her arms
Her heart seems unfixable, with tiny scattered pieces and small, sharp-edged shards
Her bruises go farther than the discoloration and splotchy skin
Harsh words leave wounds that are impossible to mend
Emotional and physical pain brought on her by kin
Leaves her with the feeling that she can’t win.
No one understands her mind, understands her scratches
No one gets that she’s special,
A diamond hidden in the ashes.
