I want to be the kinda woman who hears
“hey kid, you clean up good” from someone who
isn’t referring to her kitchen skills for once.
I want you to be the kind of man who realizes that
there once was a time when guys could hit home runs
with a ball and a bat, not just when they decide to show up
at their girlfriend’s welcome mat.
I want to be the kind of woman who can
make all the stars, and even Jupiter and Mars
not seem so far with the single touch of my hand.
The kind who can age like fine wine;
pouring sweet and clear from the brims to the dregs.
I want you to be the kind of man who can
rest the arms he carries daily in the war;
but never the ones he bears in his soul for the woman
he loves.
I want us to be the kind of couple who
can still laugh even after the world nearly
toppled in on itself.
I want the world that we create after this
giant catalyst for love that is patriotism,
to be the kind that will remember
everything we did to protect
the freedom we call life.
I want you to be the kind of man
who breaks out the warm vinyl
on the darkest night of the year,
playing the anthem of our love,
just as if the rest of the world dissipated
for a few hours.
I want to be the kind of woman
who still knows how to be refined
and sophisticated; this analog heart beats
for the old-fashioned kind of life.
I want you to be the kind of man
who realizes that it’s okay to watch
a love unfold like it’s supposed to;
keeping his eyes on the woman of his dreams
instead of the ticking clock.
I want to know what it’s like to dance
to “the voice” with someone who knows
what I mean by that.
I want to be the kind of woman who knows
what making ends meet in the real world
with someone means, and I want you to be the kind of
man who intertwines all of his many and crazy wants

with mine.

I want us to be fire and ice;
the kind that doesn’t make a puddle, but rather steam.

And baby, I hope someday we can live the dream.
