Freedom

Freedom.
I'm on my horse, Haily.
Her tangled black mane
Lays out over her neck
And I twist it around
My fingers
Caked with dirt,
And I stroke her
As we indulge
In what is
Around us.
The breeze weaves
Through the trees
By the lake.
The sun kisses the
Glistening water
Ever so gently.
Haily sighs
Beneath me
And I rise
And fall
As does she.
The bonds
Of friendship
Are never as strong
As between
A girl and her horse
As Haily and me.
The security and happiness
I feel
Is superior
To all emotions.
And as nature
Swallows us
In its beauty
And tranquility
We close our eyes
And enjoy this
Freedom.

My horse died in 2005. When we were assigned to write a poem about a special memory in class, I decided to write about her as a tribute.

So sorry about your loss. You have captured and put into words a partnership that, sadly so few people these days have known. I have a horse that is my best friend and I don't know what I'd do if anything were to happen to him.

Very nice work! I wish I could write half as good as that!

She was jet black with a small white diamond between her eyes.

Ellie-- thank you SO much for sharing this with me! I love how you echo freedom at the beginning and end. Beautiful. What does Haily look like?
