Sickness

Seven times in the morning I greet the sun
Streaming in thru the cracks between the curtains
Snooze button, snooze button, snooze button again
It's nearly 8:30 when I pull myself up

Six times downstairs I check the pot
Which won't even bubble when I glance its way
Hiss, hiss, whistle, steam
Why bother with a kettle when it's only for one?

Five times in the car I nearly cry
on the thirty minute drive from my home
Sniffle, sigh, honk, swerve
Maybe I'm to much on automatic

Four times in the lot I want to give up
I say I'm to old for all of this pain
Step forward, backward, forward again
The truth is I am to young

Three times in the lobby I look at my watch
I wonder if they can tell I don't want to be here
Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock
I sign my name with a pen made of bricks

Two times at your room I knock at the door
And my tired bones echo more then the wood
Knock, Knock, Click, Creak
There's no turning back now

One time a day I see your face
And can hardly believe that it really is you
Why, am, I , here
If your glassy eyes look right through mine?

The author's comments:
My aunt often visits her mother in a nursing home, and she often describes it as emotionally draining to see her mother slip further away each day. That was the main inspiration for this poem.

"These violent delights have violent ends And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, Which as they kiss, consume." -William Shakespere (Romeo and Juliet)

This is fantastic. Very clever the way you go from 7 to 1. Keep writing!!
