"You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived."

He perches high on the top of a telephone poll
Just waiting for the suitable time to strike
A young boy clutching a ham and cheese sandwich in one hand, and an orange juice in the other sits quietly in the sand, the ocean prancing behind him
The gull’s eyes dart to the potential victim
In a blink of an eye, his wings outstretch like a parachute unfastening from a sky diver’s belt
He departs from his hiding place
Barely dodging onlookers’ heads
He swoops past the beach umbrellas and over sun bathers
Next to the life guard whose sunglasses hide his tired eyes
He hovers over his prey
The ham and cheese sandwich calling for him to come snatch it away
He decides it is time
Time to attack
He bolts for the sandwich like a cat pouncing on a mouse
With one big gulp
The sandwich is gone
His determination helped grasp his dinner
If we all were determined like the gull
We could grasp what we truly want
