I Wonder

what brings people to the crossroads
between life and death—
voluntarily.
I wonder what monsters have brought them,
what demons they have fought.
I wonder what brings them, young and old,
tormented, all,
to purposely walk the line
between life and death, waking
and eternal sleep.
I wonder what drives them
to open their skin, down
the pills, put the gun
to their chest.
I wonder how it feels
to possess such pain.
