Cusp of the Seasons

Dead brown leaves
Disintegrate in sloshy earth
Trees have faded
From their bronze glory
Now dark and bare
The wind
Cuts through your skin
Like a dull knife
Hydrogen and oxygen
Fall in unison
Neither rain nor snow
One of the many paradoxes
Of life
Where there were sounds
Of birds singing, children laughing
It is silent
The world is muted
Even the sunlight
Is cold and grey

Grey turns back to green
Icy wind to a cold breeze
Trees stand tall
Full of life and wisdom
Rain falls
Washing away dust and regret
And life goes on
Rich with the sweetness
Of ripe fruit and the melodies
Of singing and laughter
Skeletons of seasons past
Remain:
Decaying leaves
And cakes of ice
Yet dead brown
And muted grey
Fade into the background
Into the spotlight comes
Tranquil blues,
Soft greens,
Passionate reds
The old sun
Of coldness and apathy
Now caresses me
In loving warmth
The earth begins to awaken
From her long and
Dreamless slumber.
