I hear a mother's wails and cries,
I hear a moan as another one dies,
I see a cruel crowd gaping with delight,
I see innocent children clinging with fright,
I see blood spots smeared on trees,
I maybe see things that no one else sees,
I see a dead body, hanging there,
I see a poor mother, tearing her hair,
I see a crow slowly opening its beak,
I smell a foul scent that makes the place reek,
I see the crow stuffing a morsel in its mouth,
I see the cruelty that occupied the south.

The author's comments:
Our teacher showed us a picture of a violent lynching of and African American man in the South and it made me so angry that when she told us to write a response, I wrote this poem. After reading it aloud to the class, they convinced me to submit it to the school magazine and this website.

I love the emotion in this! It makes me feel angry too without even looking at the picture.
