Neighbors

Getting the mail today,
I walked a sidewalk where my neighbor and I would talk long strides,
And discuss school, boys, and the like.
Pulling into the garage from school,
I almost ran over the old purple Skip-It
That we used to have contests with.
Moving it into the green bucket,
I discovered the green tennis balls that we would bounce over
The fence and retrieve them again.
Then, I saw the old couple who now live next to us pull into their driveway,
And I think about what I cannot discuss with them.
How they do not know my thoughts on that new Kanye West album,
Or how my blue pen leaked on my shirt in English.
It is these small, but fleeting thoughts
That make me miss my old neighbor.
