Band-Aid For A Broken Heart

A closed door doesn’t block out the fighting,
I can still hear it you know,
And I know it doesn’t mean anything,
Honest, I do,
You’ve told me enough times,
Only,
It bothers me,
Because when you fight like that,
When you yell,
We’re less of a family,
And when you fight like that,
When you yell,
A tiny part of us breaks off.

A smoothie doesn’t change the bad news,
I still know they’re dead,
And I know they were old,
Honestly, I do,
They were so fragile,
Only,
They’re still gone,
My great-grandparents,
And they aren’t coming back,
Ever,
And I’m still here,
Without them,
And I’ll never be completely whole again.

A Band-Aid doesn’t cure a broken heart,
It still hurts you know,
And I know it will heal,
If I give it time,
Only,
Right now,
I can’t think of the future,
Because of the pain,
But I know tomorrow,
The sun will come up,
And the school bus will come,
But I won’t be able to ride in peace.

A melted ice-cream doesn’t ruin a day at the park,
With my family,
And I know,
We’ll have to go home,
Only,
Right now,
I want to live in the moment,
Because this is life,
You string together,
Those small times of happiness,
And you realize,
They outnumber the sad ones.
