My fingernails press pink parentheses
into my palm.
Stoic still is my spine; an exclamation
and frustrated slash foiled
is my heartbeat.
My footprints punctuate the earth
with periods.
A maddening ellipsis
on this road.

My soul says:
Go ahead. Scream.
No one can hear you.

I open my mouth
and cry.
