Expectations

Expectations teach

Expectations teach us to show our best

Even if it means mutilating ourselves for it

It will never be enough

We can always do better

But how can we do better when we’ve been whittled down to nothing

Only a pile of dust

That suffered for a pointless title

‘Honors student’

We try to do our best

It's not enough

We try harder

Still not enough

Have to be perfect

Have to be perfect

Have to succeed

No trying

Only perfection

Why try to be perfect

When the concept of perfection is subjective?

Why make us the subjects of this long-form mental torture?

We try again

And again

And again

And again

And again

And again

And again

And again

And again

Just for it to not be enough

Your expectations

Are what taught us to fear failure

Why do expect us to embrace failure

And accept defeat

When you make us this way?

You ruined success

Because success means failure

But we’re not allowed to fail

A reality

Completely unobtainable

Just because you

Wanted to live through us

Because you failed

And aren't willing to accept

So you ruin the next generations

Just to pretend that you are successful

But because of your expectations

You failed from the beginning, not meeting your

Expectations

I wrote this because I have dealt with the stress of high expectations since grammar school, and I wanted to put to words the grief that it has caused me.
