A Distant Memory

Sitting on a dock,

waves crashing upon the shore, and

the sound of laughter coming from my family.

The simple things in life

are what I enjoy the most.

The simple things allow me

to escape into a different reality.

A distant memory that

brings me peace and clarity.

Two things I need,

especially when

all I seem to see

are the bad things

that just keep happening.

Life is like a hurricane,

completely crazy,

except for a distant memory

in the midst -

a calm in the eye.

A memory where my Granddad’s heart

is still beating, and

he still owned the land

that brings me peace and clarity.

A memory of him

driving his boat,

smiling like the moment

will never end.

Though every moment

becomes a memory.

A memory only called upon

in times of need.

A distant memory

is my refuge.

It is the calm

in the center of my storm.

I wrote this piece for my granddad, who passed away about five years ago.
