My Prince Charming (An Imitation of Gary Schmidt's Orbiting Jupiter)
How the first time he spoke my name,
He stuttered.
His nervous smile
Complementing his cherry tomato cheeks.
The way my smooth syllables roll off his tongue,
You’d think I was made just for him.
How he licks his thin lips before he speaks,
And never breaks eye contact.
How he doesn’t make me beg for his costly attention,
Or wonder what he’s thinking.
The way he fiddles with his pencil when he’s nervous,
Careful not to show off his insecurities.
And how he never makes a promise he can’t keep.
How his favorite movie is The Fault in our Stars,
But tells everyone its Iron Man.
How he says “one day,”
As if it is our “always.”
The way he speaks,
When it’s just us two.
I turn his termites into butterflies,
He says.
The answer to the question,
He never knew he had.
How he sings the gentle lyrics of “Can’t Help Falling In Love,”
Keeping his lasting gaze on me.
Like he hand-picked each word to leave his possession.
How I smile,
Knowing one day
This fairytale
Will be my chapter book.
