The best years of my life

They promised me

They told me this building would come to feel like home

My peers like family

But as I grow near to the end of my high school career

There is no sadness, no sentiment

Just relief and resentment

Because this school represents the melancholy

The sorrow

The struggles

Of my teen years

More than simple angst

Lunchless lunches

A body I would stare at in the full length mirrors of the bathroom

Classmates I would hear snicker behind me

Boys that touched me without my permission

Made comments that boiled my blood

A friend group that I was exiled from

The isolation that I brought to myself

The times I cried shamelessly at my desk

Because I no longer cared what anyone thought of me

But oh I cared so much

The breakdowns

The pressure

The best years of my life they promised me

The best years of my life they owe me
