Friends

Not really knowing if they are truly my friends or just pretending

Constantly wondering if I am good enough to hang out with them

Worrying if I am saying the right thing at the lunch table

Thoughts consumed, nights awake

Constant stress that I’m not good enough in my own skin

Wondering why they have been ignoring me for weeks now

I thought they were my friends

Then I discovered I wasn’t their friend at all

They were just using me to do their homework

At lunch the next day I walk past their table

They watch me pick my old friends instead of them

Feeling their gaze as they try to make me feel guilty

I ask my old friends if I can sit with them

At first, they hesitate but ultimately comply

Slowly I try to mend the broken friendships

I know regaining trust will take time

But the chance of true friendship is worth the wait

Years later I realize I made the right choice

Real friendships are made when you don’t have to pretend to be someone you’re not

Real friends should accept you as you are

My now best friends walk beside me instead of leaving me in the dust

They support me in everything I do as I support them

True friends should bring out the best in you, not try to tear you down.

With these friends, I am no longer lost

New friends are made, some old friends are lost

But in the end, true friendship is what really matters
