Training Wheels

I was five years old and my handlebars

Trailed pink ribbons.

I had training wheels but still,

I fell.

I remember the sprawl of limbs,

the smear of skin on sidewalk

The shredded pink knees.

I cried like a hurricane and my father

A placid summer sky

Peeled me from the cement.

I pedaled; I collapsed; I howled; I thundered

Through suburbia,

And my ribbons and my father

Trailed behind.
