Fragile Flower

I am a flower,

Fragile and sweet,

Unbothered by the world,

Or so it seems.

My skin is as thin as soft petals,

They pluck each petal,

Slowly breaking me,

Hidden behind a facade,

So they don’t see reality.

They laugh and tease,

Thinking nothing of it,

I’m a flower,

Their words can’t hurt me,

After all, it’s only a joke,

That’s what they think.

However it hurts,

Truly, deeply,

But don’t let it show,

Don’t show them I’m weak,

I am a strong, strong flower,

Or so it seems.

My petals shrivel,

Stomped on countlessly,

They trample over me,

But I’m a flower,

Strong and thriving,

It doesn’t hurt me,

Or so it seems.

I am not a strong flower,

Fragile and weak,

My petals have shriveled,

That’s the real me.

The author's comments:

I wrote this poem for a school project and it immediately became my favorite piece of writing that I've ever written. The theme of the poem assigned was identity. I wasn't quite sure how I would write it, or if I would even be able to write it at all, but once I started jotting down words, I couldn't seem to stop. This poem came to me so easily and I am very proud of it. I would like to thank my teacher, Mrs. Spradling, for inspiring me to write this poem and helping me discover just how much I love poetry.
