"I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process."- Vincent Van Gogh

I wish I had taken my chance

And rode in Elon's Tesla

Besides a crash test dummy

Who was jamming out to David Bowie

I could have volunteered for that front row

ticket to the cosmos

But I passed my chance to start a life on mars

Fresh and new and red

For all the right reasons

I'd have rover friends

And we'd know all the red filling our streets

was not blood

But dust and memories of where we came

from

The original alien with no dreams of ever going

back

I'd watch the earth turn

From a lawn chair

And wonder what destruction

Could possibly still plague the folks deep

beneath the green and blue surface

And maybe I'd miss my friends and family

And maybe I'd cry as I watched the green

disappear

And the continents shift

And when the moon got blown off course

I'd see spaceship after spaceship

Rocket towards the stars and I'd laugh shakily

with tears flowing from my eyes

as they went by

Refusing entry to my red planet

Because we don't allow bloodshed

And just think about how much blood is

already on your hands

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece after Elon Musk and his company launched his personal Tesla into space while playing Life on Mars by David Bowie, which is one of my favorite Bowie songs. When I wrote this I was feeling kind of stuck with life, wanting change, and wanting to get away from all the trouble that seems to happen in the world these days.
