Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.

I’ve had some boys try to come into my lifeTell me I’m ugly, fat, stupid,
They told me I was nothing,
And I believed it.

But I am a beautiful woman.
I am like creamer and coffee,
Caramel-colored with buttery eyes,
A learner and a teacher,
A passionate speaker and writer of fiery words.

I’ve had some boys try to come into my life
And tell me I’m not worth it.
But the difference between a girl and a woman
Is her ability to speak up,
And the difference between a boy and a man
Is his ability to respect all women,
Because we are not pieces of art you can point and laugh at.
We are living, breathing masterpieces.

The author's comments:

A woman shouldn’t feel uncomfortable in her own skin because of a boy in her life. I have had many boys try to treat my mind like a welcome mat; my feelings like toys. All women should feel like living masterpieces, not like stiff statues for people to laugh at because the artist is dead. We are the artists; we made ourselves into the beautiful people we are today and we don’t need anyone to tell us any different.
