I am from football games,

from Windex and Eucalyptus candles.

I am from the house behind the gates.

(Beige, cement,

it sounded like peace.)

I am from the palm trees

the lake

who carries the fish, gators, and nutria.

I’m from the tang pie and curly hair,

from Kathy and Margie.

I’m from the perfectionists

and the optimists,

from Safe! And Courty girl!

I’m from WWJD,

and do not forget to say

your prayers tonight.

I’m from Touro Hospital and cotton fields,

fried chicken and corn bread.

From the crown my mother wore

for Homecoming Queen,

the candles my grandma always lights.

On a shelf was a stack of family pictures

bringing back old memories and accomplishments.

I am from those family traditions--

a successful African American family--

a proud New Orleanian.
