The Opponent
In tears, I sat watching you fall.
Punch, after punch
I wondered, will he get back up
Will he rise up and defeat this monster,
Tough as nails he sat there taking every hit while throwing some back,
His opponent was unfazed, and still finding his way from head to body.
From stage to stage he always seemed to rise to the occasion but,
It seemed no matter what he did, his opponent was ready for it
I watched at first unconcerned,
Knowing that my man was the hardest working SOB to walk this earth.
I watched him fall apart day by day.
My hero, losing his will to fight, it seemed impossible
And I regret not spending every second possible with him…
For by the end of the fight I was holding him in my arms after taking his last punch as he moaned with his last breaths...

This piece is foreshadowing the loss of my grandfather due to his fight against lung cancer. The true meaning of my loss is hidden behind a metaphor of the fight he had, being equivalent to a boxing match, due to the gruesome damage that both events can cause to someone both mentally and physically.
