When I first met you, I was oblivious
Completely unaware of what was to come between us.
You were the new kid, an upperclassman.
I knew your name and that was all.
When I first started talking to you, a spark was lit.
I made a new friend, I felt so happy.
You were so inviting and warm,
Able to keep me up smiling until 2 am
When I got to know you more, best friend turned into a hopeless crush.
You drew me in more and more with your kind smile and perfect words until I was wrapped around your finger.
I found myself searching for you in any crowd,
My stomach turning with butterflies
Cheeks flushing with warmth at the sound of your name
Emotions raging with anxiety and irrational love.
When you chose her over me, I was crushed.
You told me one thing but showed me another,
My heart broke and resentment poured from the cracks.
I vowed to never speak to you again.
When you texted me again next March, I was oblivious.
I didn’t know whether to respond or not,
But what I really didn’t know was that by responding it would lead into all of this.
When we began talking again, a fire was started.
We were falling head over heels in love and we didn’t care if it was going to burn us in the end.
You fed me line after line and I ate it up
Stuffing my lonely love-starved heart with your words.
When you left me, I was lost.
You took everything
You took back the words you said
The promises you made
You took back the love you put in me and left me with nothing.
When you left me, my world crumbled around me.
My head pounding with frustration
Eyes leaking streams of sadness
Body shaking at the fear of losing you.
You were my other half
And although now you’re gone
And I’m left with nothing but unanswered questions
And cold, empty pain…
I’m grateful;
For I wouldn’t want my heart to be broken by anybody else except you
Because at least I had the privilege of having you in my life,
Even if only for a moment.

This was a piece that I had originally written with a happy ending that instead of saying "When you left me..." said "Now we're together...", however sudden heartbreak changed the story and instead of throwing this poem away and trying to forget about the story of us, I went back to it and changed it to fit my current situation and I couldn't be happier with that decision for I feel this is one of the most raw and real poems I have ever written and I hope you enjoy it too.
