A poem should be born a mystery,

It’s luminous shell encapsulating

The deep plea within.

A poem should be the dark side

Of the moon.

A poem should be a

Black swan.

She should glide over the countryside,

Wrapped in the cool embrace

Of night, casting shadows of doubt

In the moonlight.

A poem should leave just enough unsaid

To instill a subtle hum of wonder

In your mind.

A poem should be an irrefutable

Force of nature.

The sea’s waves should crash

Onto the jagged shore, raw power

Surging beneath the glassy surface.

A poem should be the moon’s gravity,

Beckoning the ocean to her.

A poem should be a whisper.

Breathe in, breathe out.

A poem should be motionless in time

As the moon climbs.

I wrote this piece in my Pre-AP Creative Writing class when we were discovering the "meaning" of poetry, and what poetry means to us. My poem plays with the darker, raw meaning of poetry and how mysterious it must be if a class full of smart young women are elluded by it's true meaning.
