you served me
cigarette butts, bitter lemon slices and overcast days
in the palms of your dirty hands
and he served me
cherry blossoms, the fresh scent of dryer sheets and the ocean breeze in his.
i took his instead,
greedily,
not realizing that was all you could give me...
and not all he could afford to.
the blossoms wilted,
the sheets lost their scent,
and the ocean breeze came to a halt
what i once craved
and yearned for,
ended suddenly.
meanwhile
you took the cigarette butts
and built a castle,
high enough so you could reach
the overcast skys
and rip the clouds apart
so the sunshine shown thru,
and you took the lemons
and made lemonade
how so sweet and sticky it was
everyone wanted a taste
my ego and cowardice
stood in the way
too fearful to come back to your new kingdom
for i had slept on the caterpillar
and praised the butterfly
your kingdom grew larger
and your head didnt get bigger
but your heart did
i showed up dressed as a beggar to your doorstep
and you welcomed me in with open arms and closed eyes
i , knowing i did wrong
unshielded myself before you
only dressed in modesty and humility
for you didnt turn me away
but still had the same reaction
and i knew then that there were bigger things
than the scent of dryer sheets
