“We’ve known each other since we were two,”
you’d boast to others and say.
Best friends for life and after that,
A bond that nothing could sway.
Two peas in a pod that sprouted and grew
and nothing got in our way.
You were a star and I was the moon
and we liked to keep it that way.
Lock and key we fit like that,
a dancer and ballet.
“You mess with her and I’ll mess with you,”
and they’d shrug and turn away.
We were sisters no doubt no doubt
complementing each other in every way.
Then years passed, puberty hit,
you began to walk by and say “Hey!”
to someone else behind me and I’d be confused
and turn to see you two walk away
laughing and I’d ask myself
“What just happened?” and continue on my way.
We’re in the same circle but it’s a large circle
with enough room to only meet halfway,
You’ve become the sun, I’m a waning crescent,
oh how I wish I could talk to you and say
that I wish we could go back to when we were two
and never have met. I don’t like feeling this way.
I’m over it and yet it aches to remember
so I forget, but this oblivion won’t stay.
Friends are for life but life can have cracks,
so all I know for sure is that I’m happy today.

Friendship is like silk - it can be beautiful and smooth, delicate and rich, but it tears easily if not handled correctly and even if fixed, it'll never look the same. This poem is inspired by one of my old friends.
