Unexpected Prom

June 27, 2011
The most talked about event of your high school career
The rush of asking that perfect guy or girl, overcoming that fear
Searching for words to fall out of your mouth
You fall speechless as no words come out
The seven deadly words that people avoid so easily
Stuttering, saying, “Will you go to prom with me?”

All I wanted was one perfect day with that special someone
I bought the sparkling dress just to kill the thoughts of knowing you couldn’t come
I closed my bedroom door and curled my hair
I painted my face with shimmering make up to make you care
I slithered my body into the beautiful fabric to get your attention
I stood tall in the satin shoes you wouldn’t see with the girl you forgot to mention

I took a hard look at myself in the mirror
Wishing I could see a little bit clearer
But the tears blurred my vision
Left me a mess all because of your stupid decision
I count the times you’ve let me down on my fingers
The fourth times the charm as you slide out of my and into her

As the days on my calendar were numbered
Dragged my feet knowing I was going under
I declined my friend’s polite offer to be his date
Hung up the phone and sat on the floor trying to get my head on straight
I pushed that beautiful dress into the back of my closet
Stripped myself of jewelry and make up, of all I wanted

Did we have that love you feel when your hearts pounding out of your chest
I had it not too long ago and now I’m grouped with all the broken rest
