"Hell is empty, all the Devils are here" ~Shakespeare's the Tempest

Hands clenched tightly,
Eyes cast down.
The world seems dead,
Nothing dares utter a sound.

A break in the silence
Causes a reaction like falling dominoes.
It starts in a single sob
Then many more follow.

Hugging and holding,
Comfort passed around.
But still it continues,
Tears hitting the ground.

Who’d have thought it?
Not me.
Is this the same person that held me in her arms?
I don’t see. I really just don’t see
How it can be.

“Let’s go visit her”
My mom does say.
I’m a bit hesitant,
But I nod in an answering way.

We pull into the driveway
My worried heart pounds.
We go in the door
And from inside sounds.

“Hey guys!” She calls
“There’s my Tiger!” She tells me.
I run into her arms thinking how,
She looks normal and cancer free!

Who’d have thought it?
Not me.
Is this the same person that held me in her arms?
I don’t see. I really just don’t see
How it can be.

Day after day
Brought new challenges forth.
And soon we realized
Just what we had in store.

Going to visit her
A little worse off each day.
I’m scared, I’ll admit it!
What else can I say?

Then one day after school
My momma’s phone rings.
I hold my breath
What message does it bring?

Tears fall once more
As she breaks the news.
Some moments ago she left us.
Some, not many, but just a few.

I sit beside her bed
Silence in the air.
And once more I admit
This gives me a great scare

But now I know
It’s truly so.

Who’d have thought it?
Not me.
But now I know it was the same person that held me in her arms.
I guess I see, I guess I now see.
I just never wanted this to be.

This is actually a true story. About my grandma's long battle with this dreaded disease. 3 years ago she lost her war with Lung Cancer. I wear the white ribbon for her.
