Annabeth is scared to death
As she leaves her last class one day
The greatest fear of her modest mind
Has come and won’t go away

Her teacher assigned a simple task
To draw a picture of your abode
The teacher said to make it pretty
But her burdens began to reload

The other kids shared the appearance of their homes
Laughing and having their fun
While sharing their details she became shy
As the seven years of her life began to rerun

Her momma carried her to many temporary homes
And she would cry in the night
She was scared to think of what would come
But she hoped that it was bright

The one night they rested on a bench in the city
For they had nowhere to stay
She become annoyed with the looks of pity
That people expressed as they walked away

She realized that things were not at their best
For her family at the current time
But she always listened to what her momma said,
“Baby just close your eyes.”

The next day she was up first
To show the picture to the class
She took little steps and showed her best
Drawing of the place she stayed last

This poem was based off a picture that was in the art show at my school during poverty awareness week.
