If I Had a Sharpened Pencil...

If I had a sharpened pencil
Oh, the things that I could do!
I could write the newest novel
Or compose a song or two

I could sketch my best friend's brother
Or make a map of my backyard
I could solve the greatest mystery
Or find the area of my car

I could learn to write in Hebrew
Greek, or Spanish, French, or Dutch;
I could illustrate a comic book
Like Superman and such.

I could make my own home movie
With cartoon characters
I could write to my Aunt Rosie
She would like that, I'm sure.

I could write a secret code
And send messages to my friends
I could learn to write a poem
But instead, I sit here wishing…

If I had a sharpened pencil
