Annie in Wonderland

in the fields where
white rabbits run and
late, late, late!-he hurries away,
if you follow him you’ll
find that curiosity kills and
there’s a price to pay.

go after that rabbit,
such a pretty rabbit,
it’s an adventure,
do you see it?-
that light at the bottom
of the rabbit hole?

fall, down, down, down;
without any thought of how
you’ll ever get out again;
down to this world of no
why, how, where, or when.

left with nothing,
only the madness of it all,
and once you start falling
you continue to fall.

after you’ve fallen down
the rabbit hole,
and everything real has been stole,
you’re trapped in wonderland with
all the craziness around you but
nothing you can do about it.

in this world where
sideways is forward, up is down
and when you cry your
tears make you drown;

and food is greed,
ignore those “eat me” cakes and
“drink me”-it might be poison,
you won’t fit through the door,
you’ll never escape,
you’ll never wake up, and
you’ll never be happy anymore.

and when asked that question,
“who are you?”
you don’t quite know,
“who am i?”,
who is that girl that
constantly will shrink and then grow?

fight the jabberwockies, let
your mind fill up with nonsense,
try and figure out why a
raven is like a writing desk,
but you’ll never know that;
and you’ll never smile like
the cheshire cat.

and the queen of hearts,
she screams and she yells,
“off with her head!”
you hold on for dear life,
hoping you will wake up and
you’re not really dead.

and the craziness rushes on,
thoughts swirl your head and
you can’t sort them out-
not even the caterpillar can help-
and though no one hears,
you scream and you shout,
“there must be a way out!”

if you’re lucky, someone loves you
enough to wake you up
and hold out their hand,
or else you’ll be forever stuck in
wonderland.

This is was written when I was too deep in an eating disorder to find a way out. I felt like I was in Alice in Wonderland, and I wrote this poem about how I felt.
